The Epistle Poem and Queer Expression with Patrick De Leon

Class Description: Explore the intimate and powerful connection between the epistle poem and queer identity in this engaging workshop. We will delve into the historical evolution of the epistle poem, and examine its key characteristics, such as direct address and personal reflection. Through different works we'll uncover how queer writers have used this form to articulate their identities, desires, and experiences. Participants will engage in close readings, discussions, and creative writing exercises, gaining a deeper understanding of how the epistle poem creates a safe space for queer expression and fosters a sense of community and dialogue.

What to Bring: Please bring a notepad or paper and something to write with.

Location: Afternoons Studio 2811 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85007

Parking at the back of the building available - do not park on street, if lot is full please park across the street at Duke’s Photography.

Bio: Patrick De Leon (he/him) is a First Generation Mexican & Guatemalan multidisciplinary artist, writer & educator whose work explores familial lineage and queer identities within the confines of the self and societal pressures of expectations, desires, and shame. He has worked for youth and cultural institutions in the Phoenix, AZ, metropolitan area. He is working on his MFA in poetry at Arizona State University, where he serves as art and web editor at Hayden’s Ferry Review. He has received fellowships from the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing.
