Character Illustration Workshop with Grey Salazar

Character Design Workshop with Grey Salazar

Learn to design and draw cute characters suitable for children’s book illustrations! Using toys and photo references, students will develop their characters' personalities and learn to work from references to bring a character to life.

In this workshop, we aim to cover:

  • Character design (character model sheets, expressions, simplification, anatomy)

  • Clothes/Prop design

  • Narrative storytelling

  • Building mood boards and photo references

Workshop Structure:

  1. Character Concept: Bring a toy, stuffed animal, or object to base your character on. Create a brief description and story for them. Think about their environment, background, and daily routine.

  2. Reference Gathering: Gather more photo references and create mood boards. Consider clothing, props, materials, textures, and personality to help shape the character.

  3. Sketching: Begin sketching concepts for your character and play around with their story. Focus on simplifying shapes, creating poses, and expressions. (A brief lesson on simplification, expressive posing, and character model sheets will be provided.)

  4. Finalization: Finalize your character design and clean it up. Once settled, optionally begin planning an illustration or scenario for your character.
